Istighfar in Islamic philosophy means a person who is always seeking forgiveness for the mistakes and keep trying to obey the commands of God and are not in violation. In Islam, meaning Istighfar lies not in the pronunciation, but to how the person who beristighfar interpret and live up to what he says, in the context of the further, so that he continues to remember the Lord when he was tempted to commit a sin, and if you have close sin, then forgiveness is a point for him to commit not to repeat his actions.

Imam Ahmad bin Hambali Ra (disciple of Imam Shafi'i), also known as Imam Hambali. The days of the end of his life, he told me;
A time (when I was already old age) I do not know why wanted to go to one city in Iraq. Though there is no promise of the same people and there was no need.
Finally Imam Ahmad went alone to the city of Basrah. He told;
Once arriving there when Isha ', I joined Isha prayers at the mosque, my heart feel calm, then I wanted a break.
Once finished the prayer and the congregation disbanded, imam Ahmad wanted to sleep in the mosque, the mosque marabouts suddenly came to meet imam Ahmad while asking; "You're going to do here, O sheikh (parents)
Marabouts do not know if he is Imam Ahmad. And Imam Ahmad did not introduce who he is.
In Iraq, everybody knew who the imam Ahmad, a great scholar and expert of hadith, a million hadiths memorized, very pious and ascetic. Days there was no picture so that people do not know his face, only his name is well known.
Ahmad replied, "I want to break, my traveler."
Marbot said, "There should not be, should not sleep in the mosque."
Imam Ahmad recalled,
"I was pushed by someone to be put out of the mosque, the mosque Once out, locked the door of the mosque. Then I want to sleep on the porch of the mosque."
When he was lying on the porch of the mosque Marbotnya come again, angry to Imam Ahmad. "Want sheikh's doing it again?" _ Said marabouts.
"Want to sleep, my traveler" _ said the imam Ahmad.
Then marabouts say;
"Inside the mosque should not, on the terrace of the mosque is also not allowed." _ Imam Ahmad expelled. Imam Ahmad recalled, _ "I pushed up the street."
Besides the mosque there are sellers of bread (a small house at the same time to make and sell bread). Sellers are making bread dough, while looking at the incidence of imam Ahmad pushed by marabouts earlier.
When the imam Ahmad reached the street, baker summoned from afar; "Let sheikh, you may nginap in my place, I have a place, even a little."
Ahmad said the priest, "Good". Imam Ahmad went into his house, sitting behind the baker who was making bread (while not introducing who he is, just say as a traveler).
The bread seller has the typical behavior, when the priest invites Ahmad spoke, answered. Otherwise, he continued to make the dough while * (continuous) * * pronounce forgiveness. * _ "Astaghfirullah" _
When salted, _astaghfirullah_, break telur_astaghfirullah_, mixing wheat _astaghfirullah_. He was always saying _istighfar_. A noble habit. Imam Ahmad attention to continue.
Then the imam Ahmad said, _ "how long have you done this?" _
The man answered;
"Sheikh's been a long time, I sold bread has been 30 years, so since then I did."
Imam Ahmad asked;
"What was the result of what you did this?"
The man answered;
"(Because wasilah istighfar) no intent / desire that I asked for, except SURE granted God, all that I ask, O God ...., immediately realized."
The Prophet, once said;
"Who maintaining seek forgiveness, God will make a way out for him from all the problems and God will give good luck on the road unexpected-but thought."
Then the man went on, "All God granted except one, still the one who has not God let me."
Imam Ahmad curious then ask;
"What is that?"
The man said;
"I ask God that met with imam Ahmad."
Immediately the imam Ahmad bertakbir, _ "Allahu Akbar ..! * God has brought me far away from Baghdad to Basra and even - until pushed by marabouts mosque - Up to the streets apparently because ISTIGHFARMU." *
Bread seller was stunned and spontaneously hugged Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal who had been missed.
My brother istigfat let us multiply, and multiply anyway we sholawat
